John Payne Spruill was a Navy Sailor, then a Welder & Inspector at the Newport News Shipyard. He Created these Ship Models in his Own "Spruill Backyard Shipway" in Newport News, Virginia from Native Materials along with Flotsam and Jetsam of Storms and High Seas. Each is a Work of Art as Seen through JP's Eyes and is an Individual Piece of Folk Art. In Many ways they are as if Salvador Dali had Designed the Navy. Interesting and Fanciful, Filled with Unexpected Details, a Turn of Humor and a Love of Things Of and From the Sea. Enjoy Our Offering and Perhaps Find Your Love of Nautical Adventure Rekindled.

Each is a Work of Art as Seen through JP's Eyes and is an Individual Piece of Folk Art. The Navy Oceanic Tug Boat SALINAN was the First Ship JP Served on during a Stint in the Navy. On this Ship, His "Wide-eyed Teen Aged Amazement of the Fierce Seas in the Wild Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico Laden with Hurricanes, Fishing Off the Fantail, Intense Heat of the Engine Rooms, Superb Culinary by Southern Cooks, Gourmet Beer of the Latinos and No Air Conditioning." Model is Made of Yellow Popular, Blown Down by Hurricane Isabelle. Name on Stern is his For Maternal Grandfather William A Nixon; "Exemplary Fellow of the Sea, British Isles Fiddling, Agriculture and Civic Duties." Replica of the Big Oceanic Tugs the Navy uses on the High Seas to Rescue Big Ships. Model is 24" x 48" x 15" Weight 70 Lbs., Created 2006. The Crew was Famous for Lively Fiddle, Guitar and Banjo Tunes and Reels of Ireland and Great Britain and for Liquid Refreshment Consumption." Sunk 7 ships and was Lost with all Hands 1 June 1944. Model was Made from a Sourwood Tree Branch from the Grounds of the Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia.
